Seasonal affective disorder, depression, and sleep disturbances affect millions worldwide, particularly in regions with prolonged darkness or amongst people working in isolated conditions. Similarly, Astronauts on deep space missions will be confronted with the challenges of isolation and confinement. Now, submarines are emerging as a unique research platform to study human adaptation to confinement and extreme environments – from ocean depths to outer space.
ESA, the Portuguese Space Agency and the Portuguese Navy are utilising these vessels to recreate isolation and confinement challenges for space exploration. Submarines replicate the operational challenges of space missions, making them ideal for studying how these conditions affect crew members and for developing strategies to help them cope.
The first crew of the SubSea project recently completed a 60-day submarine mission, where a scientific team from universities in Germany, Italy and Portugal studied how stress, mood and crew dynamics evolve in cramped quarters, much like space missions. Researchers collected data from 25 volunteers, monitoring stress markers, immune health, and psychological wellbeing.
Whilst the primary goal is to prepare astronauts for long-duration space missions, the findings could have significant terrestrial applications. The research could benefit various groups, from mining workers to polar station crews, and even help develop better treatments for clinical disorders.
“Research into life and work in confined environments provides invaluable insights into how humans adapt physically and mentally to isolation and stress,” says ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen, highlighting the project’s broader implications for human health on Earth.
This innovative approach demonstrates how space research continues to provide unexpected solutions to everyday challenges here on Earth. The SubSea project is just beginning, with plans to expand its research scope in future phases.
